Zawiya

zāwīya
Other spellings: az-Zawiya, az-Zawiyya
City in northwestern Libya with 210,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate) on the Mediterranean Sea.
Zawiya thrives from activities at the nearby oil field and the oldest oil refinery in the country. Agriculture is fed by rich ground water resources, producing potatoes, onions and tomatoes in addition to livestock raising.
Zawiya is well-connected to other urban centres of Libya, having the coastal highway passing through the city.
