Anglo-Transjordanian Treaty of 1923
The treaty from which Transjordania, now Jordan, came to be a country. It was an agreement that intended to ward off a conflict between Abdullah bni Hussein and his brother Faisal bni Hussein (from 1921, king of Iraq).
Transjordania was created in April 1922 by the British, with Abdullah as emir. The following year, the British declared that they would grant independence if a constitutional regime were established.
According to the agreement that was signed in May 1923, the British stationed troops on Transjordanian soil with the promise to protect the country against foreign attack.
