Al-Baidawi
Persian/Arabic: ¢abd ullah ¢umar 'al-baydawī
(13th century, died either 1282 or 1291) Persian Muslim scholar, mainly renowned for his works on theology.
His main work was the The Secrets of Revelation and The Secrets of Interpretation, a commentary on the Koran, a tafsir. Its approach is Mu'tazilite, and was based upon Al-Kashshaf, the tafsir of Az-Zamakhshari. While leaning on Zamakhshari, Al-Baidawi used other sources extensively. Al-Baidawi's tafsir is among the most important for the development of Islam, and is by Sunnis in general considered the best among the tafsirs. Western scholars in general consider his achievements to have been incomplete and inaccurate compared to other tafsir authors.
Al-Baidawi wrote a number of other works too, three different works on respectively jurisprudence, metaphysics and history has been widely used.
Biography
Exact years in al-Baidawi's biography are not known.
Early 13th century: Born in Fars, Iran.
Middle 13th century: Is appointed judge in Shiraz.
1282 or 1291: Dies in Tabriz.
