King of Egypt, 5th king of the 1st Dynasty, ruling from sometime around 3000 to 2950 BCE. There are no accounts to the length of his reign.
Accounts possibly from his reign, tell about battles against Bedouins of the Sinai. Ivory labels for a pair of sandals (see illustration) indicate conflicts with the Palestinians. He is the first king to have used the Egyptian title for king, "nesw-bit". He also referred to himself as "King of Upper and Lower Egypt", as well as to have worn the double crown.
He was buried at Abydos in a tomb made of red granite, but with a wooden roof. His is the first tomb to have used hard stone as building material.
According to accepted king lists, he was preceded by his mother, Queen Merneith, or father, Djet, and succeeded by Anedjib.
