Arabic: 'ad-duwaym

City in central Sudan with 220,000 inhabitants (2009 estimate), capital of the White Nile state with 1.7 million inhabitants (2008 estimate) and an area of 30,400 km². It is located along the White Nile at an elevation of 400 metres.
Agriculture is the core activity here, specializing in cotton, cereals, oil seeds, peanuts, wheat, fruits and vegetables. There are also industries and mechanized mills producing sesame and peanut oil, soap and processed food.
It is connected to other urban centres by normal roads and railways. Wad Madani is 140 northeast, Kusti 100 km south.
Ad-Duwaym is the home of the Bakht ar-Ruda University, which for long was one of the most important teaching institutions outside Khartoum when it was a teacher's training institute.
