Health services of fair quality are free and accessible to all citizens. The best health care institutions are found the cities. A comprehensive and clearly better, private health system does exist, and is preferred by those parts of society that can afford it. The maturation of the health services, has resulted in a dramatic increase in life expectancy.
Bilharzia is a disease that afflicts about half of the Egyptian population, and this is a result of poor sanitation, polluted water, inadequate nutrition and lack of public health information.
Schooling and universities are free to all citizens, and compulsory for all children between 6 and 12 years of age. Egypt has numerous universities, but the quality varies somewhat. The best universities meet high international standards. Al-Azhar, which was until quite recently an exclusively religious university, is the world's oldest, founded in 972. Ain Shams University was founded in 1950, and is the largest university in Egypt. But it is Cairo University, founded in 1908, that is the most attractive for general subjects.
