Town in eastern Egypt with 50,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate), on the Red Sea coast. It is the capital of the Red Sea governorate with 190,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate) and an area of 203,685 km².
Hurghada consists of a few centres along the coast, of which, both Dahar and Sigala function as independent market centres. Administrative activities are mainly located in Dahar. The other centres cater mainly to tourists. Today, the developed area along the coast stretches for almost 40 km.
Hurghada's economy centers predominantly in tourism, while other activities are linked with the administration of the governorate and the town itself. The main attractions for tourists are the offshore reefs, although few of them can measure up the attractions around Sharm el-Sheikh.
Hurghada was founded in the early 20th century, and tourism facilities have largely been developed since the early 1980's.
