Kilis



Kilis, Turkey

City in southern Turkey with 100,000 inhabitants, just a few kilometres from the Syrian border.
The economy of Kilis is generally based on the large production of silk and cotton manufacture. The surrounding area has a rich agriculture, specializing in olives, grapes and pistachio nuts. The town's major industries are silk and cotton manufacture.
Kilis is well-connected with other urban centres, as it lies on the main highway from Aleppo in Syria to Gaziantep. Gaziantep is 70 km northeast, Aleppo 70 km south and Adana 250 km west.

History
It is believed that Kilis is the site of the ancient Assyrian town of Kilisi.
1918: Occupied by France.
1921: Returned to Turkey.
