Mauritania has but one university, that of the capital Nouakchott, which was founded in 1981 and presently enrolls 8,000 students. There are 7 more institutions for higher education.
With its one university, the country has a university density of 1:3,400,000 inhabitants, placing Mauritania last among 22 in the MENA countries.
Mauritania's one university is not among the top 6000 in the world, according to Webometrics.
All in all, Mauritania is an extremely poor performer in the field of higher education, a reflection, or perhaps a reason for the country coming last in virtually all respects among MENA countries.
