Mazandaranis
Iranian people counting about 2.7 million, living in the southeast of the Caspian Sea, mainly in Mazandaran province, both also with large communities in the Golestan and Gilan provinces. Other estimates go as high as 4 million. The southern border for the Mazandaranis is the Alborz Mountains.
They speak Mazandarani, a language close to Persian and Gilaki. Practically all Mazandaranis also speak Persian.
Mazandarani economy is centered to fishing and agriculture.
Although a distinct people with their own language, they have an identity close to the Persian.
The Mazandaranis are practically all Muslims, belonging to the Shi'i branch.
Especially in the 17th century, many Georgians moved into the Mazandarani heartlands, and would largely become assimilated.
Among famous Mazandaranis is the central 10th century Muslim historian and theologian, at-Tabari and the 20th century ruler, Reza Shah Pahlavi and the 20th century poet, Nima Yooshij.
