(895-932) Caliph of Islam 908-932, first Abbasid caliph.
al-Muqtadir was a weak ruler, easily victim of the plots played out in the royal court. During his 25 years in power, the empire had as much as 13 viziers, most not dying from natural reasons.
The lack of leadership under al-Muqtadir, the failures on the battle ground made him extremely unpopular. The empire lost its territories in North Africa and around Mosul, was close to losing Egypt and was subject to raids by the Greeks.
Biography
895: Born. He was decedent of al-Mu'tazz.
908: While Caliph al-Muktafi is confined to his sick-bed, a battle over who should be his successor is staged. al-Muqadir is chosen while only 13 years old by the vizier.
919: al-Muqtadir pays 120,000 golden pieces to release Muslim soldiers that had been captured in the war against the Greeks, causing great anger with the people of Baghdad.
931: Rebellion against al-Muqtadir, who is forced to abdicate in favour of his brother al-Qahir. But when the rebels realize that they do not get support from the army, they reinstate al-Muqtadir.
932: al-Muqtadir is slain outside the city gate, and succeeded by al-Qahir.
