Khalifa ibn Zayed al-Nahayan

(1948- ) President of United Arab Emirates (UAE) 2004-, emir of Abu Dhabi 2004-.
It is believed that he belongs to the same moderate line as his father Zayed ibn Sultan al-Nahayan. He is noted for cooperating closely with other tribes. Among his main achievements prior to becoming president, was to create a social services department which has helped to improve the standard of living.
He has also been the chairman of the Supreme Petroleum Council for years; it is one of the most powerful institutions of UAE.
Biography

1948: Born in the Al-Ain oasis, as the eldest son of Zayed ibn Sultan al-Nahayan.
1966: Becomes the governor of the eastern provinces of Abu Dhabi.
1969: Is named crown prince of Abu Dhabi.
1971 December: Becomes deputy prime minister of UAE.
1976 May: Becomes deputy commander of the armed forces.
2004 November 3: Is appointed new president of UAE, following the death of his father.
