Nectanebo 1
King (380- 362 BCE) of Egypt, belonging to the 30th Dynasty.
The name "Nectanebo" was given to him by the Egyptian historian Mantho. His real name was Nakhtnebef.
Nectanebo 1 managed to stay in power more because of incompetence and internal strife with his principal enemy, the Persians, than because of his own competence. On the point where the Persians had defeated an Egyptian army and were about to take control over Egypt, the Persian general halted. This allowed the Egyptians to regroup, and drive the Persians out of the country.
Internally, Nectanebo was a king who put much emphasis on arts. He was involved in great projects, like building the 3 km long Avenue of Sphinxes from the Luxor Temple to the Temple of Amon at Karnak. He also added much to the temples at Philae, Edfu and Hermopolis Magna.
Biography
Nectanebo was of the town of Sebennytos, and emerged as general and chief.
380: Nepehrites 2 is removed by Nectanebo 1 who made himself new king, ending the 29th Dynasty.
373: Persia attacks Egypt, Egypt receives aid from Sparta and Athens to defend its territory, but what saved the country was disagreement in the Persian command line.
362: Dies and is succeeded by his son, Tachos.
