City in Mauritania with 80,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate), situated in the very north of the country, close to the borders to Morocco, and at the sea. It is the capital of Dakhlet Nouadhibou region with 87,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate) and an area of 22,300 km².
The economic base for Nouadhibou is fishing and fish-processing, and exportation of iron that is transported with the railways from central Mauritania. Nouadhibou was during the French colonial period known as Port Etienne.
