In Palestine, there are today 9 universities, corresponding to a university density of 1:470,000 inhabitants, placing Palestine as no. 7 of 22 in the MENA region.
In addition, two foreign universities have branches in Palestine, offering a limited number of courses at university level: Al-Azhar of Egypt; and Al-Quds Open University.
On Webometrics ranking, Palestinian universities are not performing awfully well. Five are on the Top 6000 list, the highest ranked is the Islamic University of Gaza as no. 2392, An-Najah comes no. 2838, Birzeit 3228, and Bethlehem 4999. Still, Palestine is with 56% of its universities on this list, ranked 4 of 22 in MENA, which is very impressive considering the situation of the country.

  • Birzeit University, Birzeit. Est. 1924 (developed into university in the 1960's and 1970's).
  • Hebron University, Hebron. Est. 1971.
  • Palestine Polytechnic University, Hebron. Est. 1978.
