King of Ancient Egypt 664-610 BCE, 54 years, founder of the 26th Dynasty.
With Psametik 1, Egypt returns to power after 400 years of weakness. Egypt was divided into 11 small kingdoms, and the country had been an easy prey to conquering peoples, like the Cushites around 730, and the Assyrians in 671.
It were the Assyrians who first made Psametik ruler of Sais, a kingdom in the Nile Delta, but his allegiance to them would be short-lived. With the help of mercenaries he first gained control over all of northern Egypt, then securing loyalty from the southern rulers by good diplomacy and agreements. With this control established, he oversaw through the years that the remaining rulers became replaced by his own men, who became governors subject to the king.
Biography
664: Becomes a vassal king under Assyria.
656: Takes control of Thebes, which formally had been ruled by the king of Cush, Tanutanami, placing his daughter in the new, but powerful position as God's Wife.
655: Marches into Philistia in pursuit of the Assyrians
620: Apparently Psametik repulses the Scythians from the Egyptian frontier.
610: Dies and is succeeded by Neko 2.
