Al-Qadarif, Sudan

City in northeastern Sudan with 360,000 inhabitants (2009 estimate), capital of the Al-Qadarif state with 1.35 million inhabitants (2008 estimate) and an area of 75,000 km².
Mountains surround Al-Qadarif on three sides, the city itself lies on wide, flat plains at an elevation of 600 metres, an area watered by seasonal rain. Rain season lasts 3 to 4 months, yielding an annual rainfall of 700-900 mm.
Al-Qadarif is famous for its sesame seed production, but the main agricultural product is sorghum.
Al-Qadarif is on the road between Khartoum and the Ethiopian border, the capital is 400 km northwest.
There are several ethnic groups living in Al-Qadarif, the largest group are the Shukriya Arabs, with background as camel-herding nomads.

History
1820's: Al-Qadarif grows with the many escaping the Ottoman-Egyptian regime centred to Khartoum.
