Persian: qā'imshahr
City in north-central Iran with 180,000 inhabitants (2009 estimate), in the Mazandaran province.
It is connected by highways to other urban centres of Iran, province capital Sari is 23 km northeast, Babol is 20 km northwest and Teheran is 240 km southwest.
It was originally named Aliyabad, through most of the 20th century named Shahi, renamed after 1979 to its present Qa'emshahr.
