(721-754) Caliph of Islam 750-754, first Abbasid caliph.
Being the first of the Abbasid caliphs, most of his efforts were put into securing the durability of the victory over the Umayyad, and form an administration for the new state. He allowed people with other religions to join his government. Even the army was opened up for non-Arabs and non-Muslims.
750: With the aid of Shi'is, Kharijis and Persians, as-Saffah leads his troops to victory over the Umayyad army. He has the Umayyad caliph deposed, and makes himself new caliph.
Seeks out all members of the Umayyad family to have them killed. The few who escaped, formed a new Umayyad dynasty in Spain.
754: Dies and is succeeded by his brother al-Mansur.
