Ancient Egypt / Middle Kingdom / 12th Dynasty /
Sesostris 2
Other spellings: Seostris, Senusert, Senwosret

King of Ancient Egypt, 1877-1870 BCE, 7 years, the 4th ruler of the 12th Dynasty.
It was common in the 12th Dynasty that the king made the crown prince coregent when he got old. Sesostris ruled together with his father Amenemhet 2 for 3 years, before the king died.
Sesostris 2's reign was a peaceful one, thank to his predecessors. He was therefore in a position of starting explorations of Nubia and developing Fayoum, to the west of the Nile. The development projects involved dams and waterworks that regulated the water coming from the Nile, so that marshy grounds could be drained.
Sesostris 2 built his pyramid and funerary complex at Illahun, not far from Fayoum.
