Arabic: sharīf

In Islam, a honorable designation of at least 3 meanings.
  1. A common meaning is to designate a tribal leader.
  2. A more formal meaning is to designate descendants of Hassan, son of Ali and grandson of Muhammad, the founder of Islam.
  3. Sharif has been used as the formal title of the ruler of Mecca between 1201 and 1925.
In modern Islam, the king of Morocco, Muhammad 6 rests much of his authority in the claim of being a true sharif in the second meaning.
