Traditional garment used principally in Tunisia and Libya, among Muslim women. The sifsari is usually a white one-piece cloth with loose folds that covers head and body down to the knees, held together with the teeth, hands or in some cases needles.
The sifsari is used outdoors, serving partly the purpose of the coat, worn over clothing that may well be Western in style. The sifsari is also considered to fit what is perceived as Muslim regulations on dress codes, as it hides body and hair, giving the woman a shapeless appearance.
Parallel to the sifsari is the mellia, a garment more common among rural women, which is draped across the head and shoulders.
