Through the 20th century, the population of Sudan doubled 8 times, which is fairly moderate. Population rate is in 2009 at 2.1% per year. What pulls the growth up is a high fertility rate with 4.5 children per mother and a low median age, at 19, which involves that a great percentage of the population is in child bearing age. What pulls the growth rate down is low life expectancy. No country in the MENA region has a higher death frequency than Sudan, 13 per 1,000 inhabitants.
Sudan, a country of poor services at all levels of society, still faces the challenges of a traditional society's affinity to give birth to many children both from fear of one or more children dying young, and the need for children as a security for one's old age.
