Tunisia has by 2009, 26 universities including one virutal university, corresponding to a university density of 1:400,000 inhabitants, placing Tunisia as no. 5 of 22 in the MENA region.
Most universities are in and around the capital, 16 of the total 26, Several of these are small and private. The southernmost university is that of Gabes.
Only one Tunisian university make it to the World Top 6000 ranking with Webometrics, and then surprisinly the very young Virtual University of Tunis, ranked 5806 in the world. With its high university density, low international ranking, Tunisia is a country with indications of overstretch of its human resources.
