Yom Kippur
Yom Kippur can be translated with 'Day of Atonement'. Yom Kippur, which fills one day, is on the 10. of the month Tishri, the first in the Jewish calendar. Hence, Yom Kippur is part of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year. Yom Kippur normally takes place in October, or September.
It is compulsory for all Jews to fast on Yom Kippur, except those ill or children below the age of 13. The aim of this fast is concentration on the congregation's relation to God. Central during this day are five sermons, with confessions and prayers for forgiveness from God.
