EDFU /
Inner sanctuary

Edfu, Egypt

The inner sanctuary contains a free-standing naos, the holiest structure of an Egyptian temple. Inside the naos, there was originally a gold statue of Horus, which, of course, is since long gone. The naos and its statue were added by Nectanebo 2 in the 4th century BCE.
The naos could well be considered an altar, and at the temple at Edfu its appearance is especially evocative.
