LUXOR:
Hundreds of statues

Mut precinct, Luxor, Egypt

Some of the Sekhmet statues still in their original location.

Mut precinct, Luxor, Egypt

If the Temple of Mut should have a nickname, it might be "Temple of Statues". It sounds OK? And with a total of 700 Sekhmet, human-size and made from black granite, no other temple in Egypt comes even close. The presentation could be better, since the statues still in place are just placed next to one another, as if it was an open-air storage room.
So why do statues of Sekhmet dominate a temple dedicated to another goddess? I have looked in every book I have on these matters, but never found an answer.

Possibly a colossus of Amenophis 3 lying between the temples of Mut and his own. The head and missing arm are now in the British Museum in London, Britain.
