The agora, or public square of a Greek city, is a place for fine monuments and temples. At Cyrene, the agora appears slightly confusing, but it has several beautiful statues that stand out against the golden brown stone of the buildings. The two statues on the top photo belong to the Sanctuary of Demeter and Kore, which was a circular structure into which only women were permitted to enter during an annual festival. The statues were goddesses of fertility. The lower photo shows Nike standing on top of what now is called the Naval Monument. It is believed to have been constructed in memory of a naval victory by the Ptolemies in the 3rd century BCE. The statue originally had wings, which are since long gone.
