CYRENE /
Theatre

Cyrene, Libya

The main theatre is among the oldest surviving structures of Cyrene, dating back to the 6th century BCE. More recent modifications, like a Roman rebuilding into an amphitheatre in the 2nd century CE, makes it hard to discern how much of the structure is original. Still, its present style is strongly influenced by Greek patterns.
Its size is modest, it could hardly seat more a 1000 spectators, but its setting is stunning, with the views of across the valley beneath Cyrene. On a clear day you will see the Mediterranean Sea in the far.
