LEPTIS MAGNA:
The Theatre

Leptis Magna, Libya / The Theatre

Leptis Magna, Libya / The Theatre

The theatre of Leptis Magna is among the largest of the entire Roman world. It dates back to the year 1 or 2 CE, but saw additions over the next 2 centuries.
The theatre was decorated with hundreds of statues and sculptures of gods, emperors and wealthy citizens. Two statues still remain, both in white marble.
Above the grandstand, in the middle, are the remains of a small temple.
