MEKNES:
Mausoleum of Sidi ben Aïssa

Meknes, Morocco

The mausoleum of built over the grave of the holy man Sidi ben Aïssa has recently been restored. Unfortunately, this is one more example of a tourist attraction closed for non-Muslims.
Every July a festival is staged here, being one of the most entertaining to watch. Even if many of the old days' excesses have been curtailed by Moroccoan authorities. Among the activities no longer performed are piercing of tongues and cheeks with daggers, the eating of snakes and scorpions or eating the flesh off the bodies of live sheep and goats.
