Rabat's twin city, Sale, is quite a different place from the country capital. While modern Sale is quickly being developed, the real centre is still inside the city walls. Sale has its attraction with a few fine religious buildings. It is an interesting place to explore for a few hours.
Sale, with its centuries of jihad in the form of piracy on Christian sea ports far away as well as European ships passing outside the coast of Morocco, is quite a conservative place. Sale was the home of the Sallee Rovers, and famous enough to make Daniel Defoe's write Robinson Crusoe into captivity right here in the novel.
