These musicians took me by surprise. I was sitting in a coffee shop overlooking the Grand Socco while sipping a glass of mint tea slowly. At first they played slowly and almost unnoticably, but soon the sounds coming out of their little hut became stronger and stronger and started to live by itself.
I went over and soon asked if I could record. This made them most enthusiastic, and other people around tried to do the best to aid. The recording conditions were a bit difficult, as their hut had only a small door, and there was no place inside where I could install myself. The guy with the trumpet was fascinating to watch, playing this instrument almost in trance.
The band of 3 call themselves Shuruq, and play at weddings. They were all 24 at the time of recording in August 1998. Should anyone out there be interested in their talents, I have their address.
