When Tangier is your entrance point to Morocco, you have most likely been travelling with boat- ferry or jetfoil. But there are flights between Tangier and European cities, too. And there are other ports close to Tangier, too: Ceuta and Tetouan (See Getting there).
Formalities are often dealt with during the passage, and it won't take long before you set your feet on Moroccan ground. Travellers entering Tangier without their own vehicle, will be met by some of the most hardworking hustlers in Morocco. But if you're not afraid, and show a bit of friendliness, but no interest, and just walk ahead as if there is nothing in the world you know better than the port of Tangier, you'll be on your own fairly quickly.
Some few details: Nothing a guide can do here, is worth more than 10 dh (all of them are paid by hotels or shopkeepers, to bring customers). And a taxi drive inside the city should not cost more than 5- 10 dh. The prices you will be presented with, are far above this. Once again, be stubborn but friendly, and act as if you know all about Morocco.
If you want to see one of the least visited parts of Morocco, you should spend some days in Tangier, which is actually a very nice city. But many travellers do not spend much time here, and the majority set out for legendary Fez. In between the two, you find the white mountain town Chefchaouen, the principal settlement of the Rif mountains.
