THUBURBO MAJUS:
Sanitary functions

Thuburbo Majus, Tunisia

The Romans were most hygienic, and social. The two top photos show public toilets, where every service was done in full public with others out in the same service.
The second photo is a latrine. I thought it was part of the water distributing system for the Winter Baths, being next to it, but my guide insisted that it was an elegant public toilet.

Perhaps not exactly a sanitary function, the lower photo showing an erect penis, was a sign for indicating where the town brothel was located.
The stone lies now on the ground, but was most likely standing as one of the door post.
