Monastir airport serves the largest number of charter tourists to Tunisia, being set in the belt of some of the finest resorts in the country, a part has an ideal climate for beach holidays in the first half of the summer.

The airport is effective, not too big and placed a short journey from both Sousse and Monastir. This is probably the best point of arrival in Tunisia, the airport has all facilities, and you will be out on the road or on the beach in as short time as possible.

Monastir airport is well-connected with both Sousse and Monastir by either the metro or by bus. If you want to connect to a hotel, you will have to catch a yellow taxi from the end station of the metro or bus. For more convenience, a taxi from the airport may be had at 5-7TD to Monastir, and 7-10TD to Sousse. That would bring you directly to the doorstep of your hotel.

Monastir airport has a nice selection of car rental companies, and prices vary a lot. Most local companies are cheaper than international, but do not go for the first deal! Arranging everything before you leave can turn out to be quite profitable. Use the Internet to search them out. Make sure of the following: That all taxes are included and that you have free mileage, that the condition of the car is good and that there is a good spare tire.

Monastir airport has a couple of well-stocked tax-free shops. As usual, all Tunisian products are about twice as expensive here as in town. International clothes etc. are more expensive than in the ordinary Western street shop. Alcohol and tobacco are competitive compared with other airports.

From Monastir airport there are short distances to far several great tourist resorts. Sousse is clearly the most complete, with both an old city on UNESCO's World Heritage list and a beach that never seem to stop. Monastir is also a town of history, with a ribat used in the filming of Life of Brian and beaches that rivals Sousse's. But the favourite of many is Mahdia, the first capital of the Fatmids, the later rulers of Egypt. Small, slow and beautiful is a correct description of Hergla, while Port el Kantaoui is a pulsating and well-arranged tourist ghetto.

Just to prove how conveniently located this airport is, the holy city of Kairouan is just 45 minutes away. And one of the best preserved Roman colosseums anywhere is also just 45 minutes away, in the tiny town of El Jem.
